Twitter has reportedly laid off 4,400 of its 5,500 contract employees. Some of these employees were apparently unaware of the layoff until they read about it on Twitter itself. The initial report of the layoffs was tweeted by Casey Newton, a journalist with Platformer and host of a NYTimes podcast. The functions of the company affected by the layoffs appear to include content moderation, real estate, marketing, and marketing. According to Casey, over 80% of Twitter's contractor workforce was suddenly fired without notice. One manager reported that one of their contractors was deactivated in the middle of making critical changes to child safety workflows. Casey's tweet on Sunday provided more insight into the scale of the firings. Many people were surprised that Twitter was still able to function after firing a large number of employees and contractors last week. This timing is particularly bad for working parents who now have to contend with the added stress of the holiday season. Some Twitter users were also surprised that the site was still up and running.
